Full-time professor of Criminal law at the University of Malaga, is author of more than a hundred publications, which include ten books as sole or co-author and numerous chapters of books and articles in prestigious journals in Spain and abroad. She has published works in Italy, Portugal, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Uruguay on aspects ranging from nuclear aspects of the legal theory of the offence (malice, the typical outcome, the legal good, medical negligence, among others) to specific questions of the Special Part of Criminal law (food fraud, non-payment of pensions, drugs, immigration and aliens, abortion, domestic and gender violence), covering a wide spectrum of publications on applied criminal policy. Her current lines of research focus on two fields of interest for Penal Law and Criminal Policy: (1) Penal system and diversity, with special attention to anti-discrimination law, immigration and hate crimes; and (2) Penal law and gender, addressing the various manifestations of gender violence and sexual and reproductive rights. Since 2006 she has led a consolidated inter-disciplinary team made up of researchers from various public universities working together on the following projects of the Spanish National Plan of R+D+i. She was visiting teacher in various Latin American universities, among them, the public universities of Buenos Aires and La Plata, in Argentina, the University of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay and the Higher University of San Andres, La Paz, Bolivia.She has taught courses and given conferences in numerous countries in Europe and America. She is a member of publishing and scientific boards of important journals in Spain and Latin America. On matters of legislative policy she formed part of the Committee of Experts appointed by the Ministry of Equality of the Government of Spain to advise on legislative reform of voluntary interruption of pregnancy (2008/2009) and in the international field, in 2016 she appeared as expert in the “Commission of Constitution, Codes, General Legislation and Administration” of the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay on the occasion of the penal reform in progress. Currently she is international expert on a Project of the General People’s Defender of the Nation of Argentina for “support in drawing up, implementing and disseminating defense strategies for women offenders, victims of gender violence or in vulnerable circumstances” (2017-2019), funded by Expertise France for the programme Eurosocial. She has lengthy experience in the organisation and management of international seminars and has occupied academic positions directly related to research, namely vice-dean of research at the Faculty of Law of Malaga (1993/94) or the management of the Centre for Criminology Studies at the University of La Laguna (1998-2003), among others. She was also Director of the Department of Public Law at the University of Malaga.
